Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD)

Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) is a specific crisis intervention plan that is conducted following the occurrence of a tragic event. The event may occur at the worksite, at a public location, or at a personal residence. The event may or may not be directly related to work activities. Regardless of the location or the type of tragic event, individuals are affected at work. Some traumatic events include the following:

  • Robbery
  • Work Accident
  • Crimes Against People
  • Traffic Accident
  • Unexpected Death
  • Medical Emergency
  • Employee Dismissal
  • Natural Disaster

The sooner the intervention occurs, the greater the benefits for all affected. While beginning a CISD within 24 hours is optimal, beginning within two to three days is often more realistic. Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM)

Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) is similar to CISD because it is a crisis intervention plan. The primary difference between the two is that CISM includes regularly scheduled interventions in high stress and high burnout jobs. Certain professions or organizations are bombarded with situations that deplete normal coping skills. With regularly scheduled CISM, employees are able to reduce their stress levels and improve daily functioning.

For many professions, planning for monthly CISM meetings will profoundly impact employees and the work environment. Participants have the opportunity to express their feelings, vent their frustrations, and normalize their experiences. Stress levels are reduced. Coping skills are enhanced. Morale is improved. Employees will be less likely to actively pursue other jobs. The use of sick days will be reduced. Interactions with clients, customers, and coworkers will be more positive.

Employee Assistance Programs

Today it is common for companies to obtain access to Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) which are maintained and managed in other cities or states. These management companies will then contract with local professionals who will actually provide the services to the employees and the company.

Violence Prevention Programs

According to one FBI estimate, between 85 - 90% of all violent incidents in the workplace are PREVENTABLE! Violence at the worksite can take many forms. Physical attacks are more probable from customers or clients. Psychological violence such as intimidation or harassment is more likely to originate from coworkers, subordinates, or supervisors.

Violence Risk Assessment

Four factors interact to incite violence: the Person, the Setting, the Situation, and the Target. Each factor is worthy of evaluation if a potential for problems exists. Risky and dangerous behaviors are possible at public locations, such as at work or at school, or at private places. The following risk factors relate to the Person and the Situation:

  • Perceptions of Injustice
  • Loss of Control
  • Perceptions of Disrespect
  • Loss of Dignity
  • Feelings of Humiliation
  • Loss of Power
  • Feelings of Alienation
  • Loss of Position
  • Feelings of Frustration

Perceptions can be as important as facts. The Setting may support or interfere with possible violence. The Target may be viewed as the cause of the problem. Or, innocent bystanders may be chosen as Multiple Targets as a method of increasing the shocking and tragic nature of the violent actions.
