Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD)
Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) is a specific crisis intervention plan that is conducted following the occurrence of a tragic event. The event may occur at the worksite, at a public location, or at a personal residence. The event may or may not be directly related to work activities. Regardless of the location or the type of tragic event, individuals are affected at work. Some traumatic events include the following:
- Work Accident
- Crimes Against People
- Traffic Accident
- Unexpected Death
- Medical Emergency
- Employee Dismissal
- Natural Disaster
The sooner the intervention occurs, the greater the benefits for all affected. While beginning a CISD within 24 hours is optimal, beginning within two to three days is often more realistic. A worthwhile process is to develop a CISD plan and a professional relationship prior to the occurrence of a tragic event. Contact Dr. Bonner for more information.
Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM)
Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) is similar to CISD because it is a crisis intervention plan. The primary difference between the two is that CISM includes regularly scheduled interventions in high stress and high burnout jobs. Certain professions or organizations are bombarded with situations that deplete normal coping skills. With regularly scheduled CISM, employees are able to reduce their stress levels and improve daily functioning.
For many professions, planning for monthly CISM meetings will profoundly impact employees and the work environment. Participants have the opportunity to express their feelings, vent their frustrations, and normalize their experiences. Stress levels are reduced. Coping skills are enhanced. Morale is improved. Employees will be less likely to actively pursue other jobs. The use of sick days will be reduced. Interactions with clients, customers, and coworkers will be more positive.
Some examples of high stress and high burnout professions include the following:
- Public Safety: Police Officers, Firefighters, Emergency Medical Personnel, Security Officers
- Nursing: Emergency Room, Intensive or Critical Care, Pediatrics, Cancer Specialists, Hospice, Home Health, Nursing Home Care, Alzheimer's Care
- Health Services: Dentists, Dental Assistants, Dental Hygienists, Direct Care Workers, Medical Technologists, Rehabilitation Specialists, Radiology Technologists, Phlebotomists, CNAs
- Human Services: Counselors, Social Workers, Therapists, Teachers, Day Care Workers
- Business Services: Bank Tellers, Loan Officers, Credit Collectors, Customer Service Representatives, Managers
If you are wondering whether your employees, department, or group might benefit from regularly scheduled CISM meetings, contact Dr. Bonner for detailed answers.
Employee Assistance Programs
Today it is common for companies to obtain access to Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) which are maintained and managed in other cities or states. These management companies will then contract with local professionals who will actually provide the services to the employees and the company.
Rather than contracting with outside vendors, consider working directly with a local EAP resource. The EAP Services provided by Bonner Solutions & Services will be individually tailored to the specific needs of your company or organization.
EAP Services include regularly scheduled In-Services or Lunch & Learn programs at your work location or offsite. Employees will have direct access to local professionals. Management will benefit from immediate consultations regarding difficult issues, situations, or people. For managers and owners, a well-developed EAP relationship will provide timely access to a local professional if a tragic event occurs. Concerns of Violence or Fitness-For-Duty will be addressed quickly and appropriately.
Regardless of the size of your group or organization, Bonner Solutions & Services is a local EAP resource that you can trust!
Violence Prevention Programs
According to one FBI estimate, between 85 - 90% of all violent incidents in the workplace are PREVENTABLE! Violence at the worksite can take many forms. Physical attacks are more probable from customers or clients. Psychological violence such as intimidation or harassment is more likely to originate from coworkers, subordinates, or supervisors.
Proactive Violence Prevention will promote the health of employees and the viability of the organization. Employee relations will be enhanced. Customer satisfaction will be increased. And, the overall work environment will be improved. Early detection and stress reduction are vital to Violence Prevention at the worksite. If you are concerned about your workplace, contact Dr. Bonner for more information. You may also view Violence Prevention Programs at Training Solutions.
Violence Risk Assessment
Four factors interact to incite violence: the Person, the Setting, the Situation, and the Target. Each factor is worthy of evaluation if a potential for problems exists. Risky and dangerous behaviors are possible at public locations, such as at work or at school, or at private places. The following risk factors relate to the Person and the Situation:
- Perceptions of Injustice
- Loss of Control
- Perceptions of Disrespect
- Loss of Dignity
- Feelings of Humiliation
- Loss of Power
- Feelings of Alienation
- Loss of Position
- Feelings of Frustration
Perceptions can be as important as facts. The Setting may support or interfere with possible violence. The Target may be viewed as the cause of the problem. Or, innocent bystanders may be chosen as Multiple Targets as a method of increasing the shocking and tragic nature of the violent actions.
If you are concerned about the Person - either an employee or a customer, contact Dr. Bonner for an assessment of the Person and the issues. If you are worried about specific situations or the entire work environment, contact Dr. Bonner for an analysis of the problems and for the development of solutions. Early detection and early, proactive interventions are vital. The results will demonstrate the profound impact of psychology in real life and real situations. Many work duties and work settings mandate that an employee must demonstrate a minimum level of ability, awareness, and competence. If there is any question of whether an employee currently meets the minimum standards, consider a Fitness-For-Duty Evaluation.
The Fitness-For-Duty Evaluation will provide answers about an employee's current functioning and future potential. Decisions will be grounded in scientific, professional, and legally-defensible analyses. If there is any doubt, do not hesitate to contact Dr. Bonner at Bonner Solutions & Services.
